When the BMW M2 debuted just over a year ago, many started throwing out comparisons to old Bavarian-made mainstays like the 1M Coupe and the 2002 Turbo. While many scoffed at those—since the tech in today’s M models make them incomparable to the cars of the past—it has since proved itself more than worthy of them. Just ask Autoblog, who recently named the M2 one of their favorite performance cars to drive.

There certainly are more powerful cars in the BMW M Performance stable—the M3 and M4 come readily to mind. Although what few fail to account for is what is done with that power. The M2 of 2017 comes with a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder with 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough to get it moving. Yet what sets this model apart isn’t found on its spec sheet.

The secret of the M2’s success is the authenticity with which it delivers its performance. Every note of the engine is genuine—rather than piped in through the car’s sound system like other performance models. With its balanced chassis and manual transmission, the M2 can be driven any way you want it without the need for drive mode toggles. This is performance as it’s intended.
