It’s famous for its palmetto trees, shrimp boats, big front porches, and it’s a wonderful food.

#2 Hilton Head is 42 Square Miles of Fun

Hilton Head has over 50 miles of public pathways and nature trails for hiking, walking, and biking. It also boasts 12 miles of wide, beautiful, sandy beaches with plenty of public access areas. There are 24 championship golf courses and over 40 courses in the area for people to play. There are also over 300 tennis courts encompassing all three Grand Slam surfaces—grass, clay, and hard courts.

#3 The Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum on Hilton Head

The Harbour Town Lighthouse marks the southwest tip of Hilton Head Island. It’s just over fifty years old and serves not only as a beacon to the ships and boats in the area but as a welcoming symbol of Hilton Head Island to people around the world. In 2001, they added a Lighthouse Legends tour that offers a fun and informative experience for guests and donates the ticket sales proceeds to local and national charities.

#4 Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Just off the northwest coast of Hilton Head Island lies the Pinckney Island NWR. This beautiful area consists of 4,053 acres that include Pinckney Island (the largest island and only one open to the public), and numerous smaller islands and hammocks. The refuge encompasses salt marshes, tidal creeks, forestland, brushland, fallow fields, and freshwater ponds. These habitats support a large diversity of wildlife including birds, sea turtles, white-tailed deer, bobcats, and American alligators.

#5 Hilton Head is a Hotspot for Water Sports Enthusiasts

If you love the water, you’ve come to the right place. #6 You Have to Cross a Bridge to Get to Hilton Head

The first bridge connecting Hilton Head to the mainland was the J. Byrnes Bridge that opened in 1956. In the beginning, you had to pay a toll of $2.50 to go over and back. This was a swing bridge that turned on a center support to allow boats to pass through. When the island’s population grew, this bridge was replaced by the four-lane Wilton Graves Bridge that is tall enough to allow boats to pass underneath.
